Suge Knight is an American music producer and businessman. He is co-founder and CEO of Death Row Records. Formerly a music executive and involved in the infamous gangster lifestyle and rave often associated with the black man. How was Suge Knight’s Early Life?
Suge Knight was born Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. on April 19, 1965, in Compton, California, USA. Knight went from nicknames; Sugar bear to Suge and eventually settled for Suge Knight which is how he is best known. He was born to parents Maxine and Marion Knight Sr. He has two older siblings; Charlinda Tubbs and Karen Anderson.
Where was Suge Knight’s Education?
Suge Knight schooled at Lynwood High School where he did a lot of sports, football particularly. He was considered a track star. He was part of the graduating class of 1983. He went on to El Camino College, Torrance, California. There, he also continued playing football. From El Camino, he was later transferred to the University of Nevada in Las Vegas for two years.

Knight after school kept to football for a while. He however didn’t play football for long. After football, his first job had been as an event promoter and celebrity bodyguard. Giving his body build, this no surprise. He was at one point bodyguard to Bobby Brown. Knight grew into the music industry soon after. He created his own music publishing company, his first signee had been Vanilla Ice also known as Robert Van Winkle. The agreement had been for Knight to get a share of royalties for the mega-hit jam, Ice Ice Baby.
He went on to also create an artist management company and then signed hip hop artists; The D.O.C. and DJ Quik. There had been unending stories of Knight’s violence in the industry, from shaking Vanilla Ice by the ankle off a balcony to later involvements with N.W.A, a gangsta rap group, through his signed artist, D.O.C.
Knight was also said to have threatened the manager of Ruthless Records to get D.O.C and Dr. Dre off the records when the wanted to leave but couldn’t. The three later created the Death Row Records together. The record had been quite the hit in the late 90s with Dr. Dre’s debut album Doggystle which gained Platinum certification in the United States in 1994.
In 1995, Knight signed Tupac Shakur to Death Row Records after the two reached an agreement that if Knight paid Tupac’s bail of 1.4 million, he would join the record. The two worked together on several songs alongside a mutual friend, MC Hammers.
What happened to Death Row Records?
Following a number of violent incidents, gang attacks, and deaths, the record steadily declined. D.O.C and Dr. Dre left the record as a result. The crime and gang involvements seemed to reach its apex with the death of Tupac and Biggie Smalls. Knight was in some cases the prime suspect of the murders.
On 4th October 2004, Death Row Records officially declared its state of bankruptcy. In 2006, the record was bought out in court by Wideawake Entertainment under and subsequently all equipment was sold out on auction on January 25, 2009.
Is Suge Knight Married?
Knight has been in a number of relationships and even married a couple of times. In the 80s till 90s, he was in a relationship with Sharitha Lee. The two were in a long on and off relationship. They eventually got married and together they had a son, Arion.
In 1991, Knight got romantically involved with Michael’le who was at the time signed to Death Row Records. The two couples got married in 1999 and had a daughter, Balei by 2002. The marriage however didn’t last as Knight apparently hadn’t divorced his first wife, Sharitha Lee. The couple split in 2005.
Suge Knight Brush with Death?
After several arrests for crimes ranging from assault to armed robbery, the former music executive also had a near-death experience after a hit attempt. On August 24, 2014, at a Chris Brown party, he was shot six times. Knight was however able to walk by himself to an ambulance after taking six bullets. He was operated on after that and he pulled through.

January 2015, Knight ran over two persons and killed one of them, Terry Carter, who was his friend. Knight fled from the scene. Statements from witnesses told that the hit had been intentional. After a long drag of court trials with Knight pleading no consent; a plea that an accused accepts the conviction but avoids a factual admission of guilt; with his health worsening during the period as well, Knight was finally sentenced after the case was resumed in September 2018. Suge Knight is currently serving a 28 years sentence for manslaughter at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
